Certified Social Media Consultant, Speaker and Published Author Tafadzwa L. Gotora

What are your plans for this year?

My plans include developing my scope from specializing in Social Media to mastering all the components of digital marketing. I have also applied to attend the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders in the US.

What is your educational background?

My background is in Media Studies.

Is this back ground helping you in your work life?

It is indeed helping me in my current work situation as I have to come up with copy for various clients for their websites and corporate social media accounts.

What has not helped?

Media Development in Zimbabwe and Africa and Media Policy, Law and Ethics from a journalist side of things do not really contribute much to the current position that I hold as a Digital Account Executive.

How have people in Zimbabwe embraced social media and its marketing side?

According to results published by THE Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) in December 2015, Zimbabwe’s mobile penetration increased from 92.8% in the previous quarter to 95.4% by December 2015. Zimbabwe’s active internet subscriptions increased   to 6,575,591. POTRAZ also recorded an increase in mobile data utilisation which went up by 27.4% which can be attributed to people being on Social Media.

Social Media has also been embraced by most Zimbabweans the demographics differ by social media platform with Facebook being the most utilised. Twitter appeals to the more elite and Instagram and Snapchat have been adopted by millennials.

In the business sector, corporates are beginning to appreciate the importance of social media not only for brand awareness and marketing and sales but also for reputation management and customer services. Although some big companies run by much older executives are still to warm up to the idea.

Do you have a preference in projects?

I prefer projects that speak to my creative and innovative side and require me to think outside the box to come up with exciting campaigns.

Being a creative individual I am by nature not a very structured and organized person therefore If I am working on a projects I avoid being involved with the finer details and would rather concentrate on the big idea and helping to bring it to life by motivating and helping the team to buy in.

What are you reading now and who would you like to meet some day?

I am reading The Google Story by Mark Malseed and David A. Vise and I would like to meet President Barack Obama , Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Dambisa Moyo.
